 SFC - P.L. Steponkus CRYSTAL Award

Student MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY FOR CRYOBIOLOGY (SFC) OR OF THE SOCIETY FOR LOW TEMPERATURE BIOLOGY (SLTB) are invited to compete for the Peter L. Steponkus Crystal Award, which is awarded for the best student oral presentation CRIOBIOMOL.  Students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program or students who completed their degrees within one year prior to the annual meeting are eligible to apply for the award.  Applicants must be members of the Society for Cryobiology or of the Society for Low Temperature Biology, or must have applied for membership prior to submission of their application.  Only oral presentations are eligible for consideration, and the presentation must represent the independent research of the student either an undergraduate research project or graduate student thesis research.

Peter L. Steponkus Crystal Award presentations will be judged primarily on the basis of scientific content and demonstrated creativity, innovativeness, significance and impact of the research findings on the particular area of cryobiology that is the subject of presentation.  In addition to scientific merit, the delivery of the presentation and response to questions will also be considered by a panel of judges.

The Peter L. Steponkus Crystal Award includes a plaque and a US$500 cash award, which will be presented at the Congress Dinner.

To be considered for the Peter L. Steponkus Crystal Award, the following application materials are required:

ˇA copy of the abstract previously submitted for an oral presentation at CRYOBIOMOL 2003;

ˇThe faculty supervisor should submit a letter of recommendation via email.  The letter should confirm the student status (or graduation date) of the applicant, and describe the contributions made by the student to the work that will be presented.

Both items should be submitted in electronic format only, via email to:

The award is in the form of a certificate together with a money prize (amount still to define) and publication of the communication as a full paper in CRYOBIOLOGY (paper subjected to normal peer-reviewing). The major criteria for selecting the winner are the scientific content and originality of the work, the potential impact for Cryobiology, and the clarity of the poster. This award is not restricted to students.

Applicants should indicate their wish to enter for this award at the time of submitting their abstract.
